Ways To Avoid Misunderstandings In International Schools

Enrolling your child in an international school can be challenging because of the diversified culture in the school and the faculty, for that reason, parents and their children are prone to misunderstandings for quite a few reasons. However, don’t worry, because you can prevent these misunderstandings from happening. Here are several ways that you can consider doing if you want to prevent any conflict in International schools.

Don’t make any racist remarks

It is already crucial for one to be well-mannered when they’re in a local school, but with the high number of foreign students in the institution, it makes it all the more important for one to remain courteous and respectful to their schoolmates.

Usually, these foreigners are required to stay in a different country for work reasons, and for that reason, they will tend to bring their families them, especially if they have long-term contracts in their respective companies. After the contract has expired, some of them may even decide to migrate into the particular country that they’re working at if they comfortable with the living environment and people.

Henceforth, a parent must acquaint to your child that every nationality or person is equal, and most importantly, make sure that he or she does not discriminate anyone for their colour, origin or even the language that they speak. Everyone is equal no matter where they are from, regardless of whether you are a local, foreigner or permanent resident (PR).

Slowly explain to your child that having a racist attitude will bring them no good, especially if they are enrolled in an international school in Singapore, in which people’s culture is mostly diversified because of a large number of expatriates that are working in the country.

As a parent, you should practice what you preach, so must discriminate a child or their family even if they come different backgrounds. To make sure that your child does not conduct in any misbehaviour like making racist remarks, you will first have to be a good role model in front of your child. In that way, your child will be able to follow your behaviour and demonstrate it in school as well.

Avoid using promissory notes

One may think that the use of promissory notes is harmless, however in, reality, it may be detrimental to your child’s reputation. Using a promissory note when your child is in kindergarten or primary school is still considered appropriate as your child is at a young age and will probably be unaware of their surroundings. But it’s different when your child is all grown up, not to forget, the rest of the students in the school too. This means that most people would know what a promissory note is at that age.

It may give your child a hard time as they are being discriminated for not being able to pay the tuition fee on time. Sometimes it may be because it slipped past a parent’s mind or in worst cases, not being able to pay for the fees as one is short on cash. Though it may even be due to financial difficulties, people usually tend to think badly of others instead of understanding the situation. In that case, your child may be one of the victims and be compared to the rest of the students.

Such incidents are unfortunate but it is bound to happen. So, instead of handing in a promissory note, you should submit your payment on time. Save up on some extra cash beforehand, so that you won’t miss the date of payment. On the other hand, if you are facing any financial difficulty there are always financial assistance schemes to help families who are struggling with money issues.

Avoid protesting of grades

Eventually, you’ll have to learn how to accept things, it is one of the most important mindset that you can incorporate within yourself as a parent. This is especially crucial in terms of grades, as most of the time parents are unable to accept the grades that their child has gotten. Confrontations arise in this category when a child is running for honours and did not get the grades that the parents were expecting. Because of that, parents will be confronting the teachers and even the principal to ask about the drop in their child’s grades.

You should avoid letting your emotions rule your behaviour, as this will leave a bad impression on the school, for the child and yourself. At the end of the day, your child will be the one who has to suffer the consequences as it may end up with him or her attaining a terrible reputation.

At times, the school may not even be the cause for your child’s grades, the problem may even lie with your child instead. If that is so, take action to make sure that your child improves in his studies, whether it is issuing more assignments and homework, or hiring a private tutor for your child.

With these tips, you will be able to prevent any misunderstandings when your child enrols in an international school. What’s more, ensure a smooth-sailing journey for him or her!
